Generation Dundee

Youth Action at 2017 Fetival of Musems

With just over a week to go until this year’s Festival of Museums, the McManus is already buzzing with actors, musicians, and dancers rehearsing and finalising arrangements for the big day!

Inspired by Scotland’s ‘Year of Young People’ and the museum’s year-long exhibition of portraiture, our Festival of Museums event celebrates the life stories, creativity and aspiration of young Dundonians through the years. Throughout the afternoon there will be family activities, curator’s talks, live music, dance, poetry and living history performances.

This year we celebrate ‘Year of the Young People’, which is an opportunity for young people’s voices to be heard within the city.  Young people have played a key role in this years Festival of Museums, from attending planning meetings to delivery, preparing documentation on the day, and sharing their own work with audiences.

The McManus Youth Action Group and the V&A Young People’s Collective have joined forces to invite this year’s festival audiences to drop in and take part in a fun, creative session exploring ‘Sense of Place’. We hope this will provide opportunities for young people to express themselves and provide a platform to have their views heard and acted upon. We also want to showcase their amazing talents and develop a better understanding of links between the generations.

Cut, paste, design and collage – contribute to our I:D Jam session; create and play! Express yourself and contribute to our ‘Wall of Words’ installation with your thoughts and aspirations, and tell us what life is really like for young people in Dundee today!

Are you bursting with creative ideas? Do you want to get your views heard? Then come along, hang out with us and find out how you can get involved with the museum and become a member of our Youth Action Group!

Festival of Museums takes place on Saturday the 19th of May from 12-4pm. It is free and there is no need to book, just drop in on the day.

Our evening event, ‘Are Ye Dancin’? – We’re Askin’!’, a journey across generations of dance in the city, is bookable via www.generationdancedundee.eventbrite.co.uk and runs from 6:30-9pm on the 19th of May.

We hope to see you on the day, come and say hello!
